  5. A rectangle has width x cm and length (x + 3) cm. Its perimeter is 22 cm. Find its dimensions. (3 marks)

Answers and explanations
  1. 7x − 2. Award 1 mark for combining the like terms correctly.

  2. 2x = 12 (1 mark); x = 6 (1 mark).

  3. 3y = 15 (1 mark); y = 5 (1 mark).

  4. 2 × 4 + 3 (1 mark); 11 (1 mark).

  5. 2x + 2(x + 3) = 22 (1 mark); 4x = 16, so x = 4 (1 mark); width 4 cm and length 7 cm (1 mark).
