Grade 1 Revision & Practice

Use ten safe everyday objects, such as counters, to make two groups. Say how many objects are in each group, then count the total. Moving one counter between groups changes the parts but leaves the total unchanged. This makes a number sentence something a learner can see and explain.

Counting and number bonds

  1. Count each object once, touching it as you count.
  2. Separate ten counters into two groups and record the matching addition.
  3. Read the free number-bonds activity aloud; ask the learner to explain one answer.

Try a short question

There are 7 counters in one group. How many more make 10?

Answer and explanation

3 counters. Counting on from 7 gives 8, 9, 10: three more.
