Linear equations and checking solutions

  1. Identify the operations applied to the unknown.
  2. Undo those operations in reverse order on both sides.
  3. Check the result in the original equation, not only in your last line.

Try a short question

Solve 4x − 3 = 21.

Answer and explanation

Add 3 to both sides: 4x = 24. Divide by 4: x = 6. Check: 4 × 6 − 3 = 21.
